How Relegation Works

Unlike American sports leagues, the Premier League uses a promotion-relegation system that adds high stakes to the final weeks of the season for clubs at the bottom of the table.

Relegation (Bottom 3)

The three clubs finishing in 18th, 19th, and 20th place at the end of the 38-match season are relegated to the Championship. They lose Premier League revenue and must earn promotion back.

Automatic Promotion (Top 2)

The top 2 finishers in the Championship (second tier) are automatically promoted to the Premier League for the following season.

Playoff Promotion (1 Spot)

Championship clubs finishing 3rd through 6th enter a playoff bracket. The playoff final winner earns the third and final promotion spot to the Premier League.

Premier League Match Day Viewing

A typical Premier League matchweek features 10 matches spread across multiple broadcast windows. Here is how games are distributed for North American viewers.
