Playing Surfaces Explained

Professional tennis is played on three primary surfaces, each favoring different playing styles. The tour moves between surfaces throughout the season.

Hard Court

Season: Jan-Mar, Aug-Nov

Grand Slam: Australian Open, US Open

The most common surface in professional tennis. Provides a medium-pace game with consistent bounces. Used at the majority of ATP/WTA events and two Grand Slams.

Clay Court

Season: Apr-Jun

Grand Slam: French Open (Roland Garros)

Slower surface that produces higher bounces and longer rallies. Favors baseline players with heavy topspin. The European spring clay season is a distinct part of the calendar.

Grass Court

Season: Jun-Jul

Grand Slam: Wimbledon

The fastest surface with low, unpredictable bounces. Favors serve-and-volley players. The grass season is the shortest, lasting approximately 4 weeks including Wimbledon.
